Aluminum Camping

When our family is on a camping trip, we eat in style because we use gourmet quality camping cooking equipment.
In camping, nothing can be worse than being in the middle of nowhere and then realizing you forgot your wok, for the many stir fries you planned on cooking.  Our wok works double time because we don't only use it for stir frying, we use it for making pancakes, frying fish, soups, cowboy chili, and pancakes. The right camping equipment always makes a difference.
However, you really have to be organized when you are carrying a near complete camp kitchen. So one of the best investments you can make for camping trips is to find the right bins to store your camping cooking equipment in. It should fit in your vehicle, with easy access in and out. It should be see through clear.
We've used Sterilite and Rubber maid bins to house our camping cooking equipment and food. Each bin holds it own particular items. You could designate one bin for plates, bowls, cutleries, napkins, kitchen towels, plastic wraps, ladles, etc. One for all the canned goods, peanut butter, bottled stuff. One for all the snacks and carbs like bread, crackers, cookies, nuts, dried fruits. One for condiments, sauces, grains, tea, coffee, cocoa, pasta. Find your own system that will make things easier for you to find items. Label them as necessary so other family members know where to put the camping equipment and supplies back. Keeping food and camping cooking equipment contained in containers make for ease in getting things in and out.
I remember our first major camping trips when I used just paper bags and plastic grocery bags to store our camping cooking equipment. That was a pain and the bags lasted about two days and then they were goners. We ended up stuffing things here and there randomly, piling this over that, which made it inconvenient to find things. So try to find containers suitable for your camping style and vehicle cargo space.

My first dutch oven: Aluminum or cast iron?
Hmm, wonder if Hasbro makes a little pink one called "My First Dutch Oven?" lol!
I'm going to try it out this summer for the first time. I've read the sites, but wondered what you all thought. I'm a woman, and while I'm young enough I'm not that strong, so aluminum appeals to me, since I want to be able to maneuver the thing if my husband isn't nearby.
On the other hand, I keep reading things that say aluminum will let food burn too easily, and since I'm a complete noob at this, it has me worried.
Also, when camping, we're terrible about cleaning out our dishes right away, so I want something that's low-maintenance. Cast iron doesn't let food stick as badly, but there's the whole routine of caring for it after each use.
What do you use/what would you recommend? I'll just be cooking for 5 people, mostly simmering dishes such as stews, and maybe some BBQ pulled pork.
Thanks!
You're talking about a camping Dutch Oven, correct? The weight advantages of an aluminum one are great if you need to do so - I know a guy who swears by his GSI D.O. - for kayak camping. It fits! The aluminum is thinner, heats faster, etc. So your cooking times need to be adjusted.
I'm partial to cast iron - I have 2 Lodge camping D.O.s. Make sure you get them with legs (the ones without legs are for home use). Even when you've got a good finish on them food can stick; if you burn anything at all, it'll stick, but it's not that hard to clean. My sister is notorious for cleaning hers the next day after...
The best tool for cleaning cast iron that I've found are little nylon pan scrapers. Should be available at Target, Walmart, Pampered Chef, or your local grocery store bakeware aisle. They work really well. Heat up the dirty pot with water in it, and as it cools, scrape the gunk off.
For five, I'd recommend a 12" Dutch. I use the 12 to cook for a 4-7 of us, and I have a 10" one for 2-4 people. Another great tool to have are these aluminum pan liners: http://www.campliner.com/
I buy them online here:

You can certainly line the oven with aluminum foil for really messy items, but the pre-formed liners are nice if you're looking to impress camping buddies!
On a river trip, I had a pot of Irish Stew prepared from home that I heated up on my little camp stove (it's always better a day or two later). I baked Boston Brown bread in the aluminum liner in the 12" Lodge Dutch to accompany the stew. Both done at the exact same time. Popped the liner from the bread out of the Dutch, and baked a pineapple upside down cake for dessert for my friend's birthday. All turned out perfectly!
Stews and pulled pork are great in the D.O.s. Another really tasty thing to try: Roasted turkey breast with veggies. Put baby red potatoes, baby carrots, onions & any other veggies you like in the D.O. with a half turkey breast (season it well) into the D.O. I usually add whatever liquid we have on hand; water, white wine, red wine, beer, chicken stock, etc. Coals on the bottom and the top, and it's an amazing dinner. I've done beef roasts this way too. Nothing better than driving the campers nuts with the smell of good food.
