Bike Head

If you've read my other articles you'll know by now that there are three main methods to safely securing your bike; wall mounted storage, a dedicated storage shed and ceiling mounted, the focus of this article is the last one - ceiling mounted bike storage.
Ceiling mounted bike storage is not widely known about or perhaps even used, but this type of storage in the right location is fantastic. With your bike held up off the floor it takes up no floor space, is held in such a manor that it cannot be easily damaged and it cannot cause injury to any passers by. Although you may think that lifting your bike above head height may be demanding for some people, you'd be wrong - any one that is able bodied enough to be able to cycle a bicycle can operated a ceiling mounted storage system.
So how does this ceiling mounted bike racks work?
In essence the system is very simple and comprise two ceiling mounted brackets, three pulleys, two two prong hooks attached to a length of rope and a bracket to keep the rope tidy. The system is so simple that there is barely anything to go wrong so don't let this put you off.
So here's how it works;
- You put one hook on the handlebars - the two prongs sit either side of the handlebar stem - and the other hook goes underneath the saddle. Both hooks are identical so if you can put the bike on the system either way.
- Next, you take the rope and hoist the bike up to the ceiling, you don't need to worry about the bike falling to the ground - after each pull that you do the system locks so that it is impossible to drop the bike.
- To finish and to keep everything tidy tie off the rope on the bracket.
Now, you may be thinking that you need to hoist up the full weight of the bike, however the clever arrangement of the pulleys significantly reduces the weight of the bike to the user of the system.
To reclaim your bike from the skies all you need to do is repeat the process in reverse. It really couldn't be easier.
So to answer the question in the title - if you have the right space in your home then a ceiling mounted system is very good.
Is a ceiling mounted rack suitable for your home?
A ceiling mounted bike rack isn't for everyone's home or garage though, you need a good strong ceiling and to be able to locate the joists. Not only do you need to have strong ceilings you also ideally need the ceiling to be high enough that your bike can be lifted above head height.
If you don't have high ceilings you may be better off looking at other types of bicycle storage that are discussed on the Bicycle Storage Guide website.
How do I get the allen bolt out of my bike when the head broke clean off?
While adjusting my disk brake, I broke the head of an allen bolt right off, and now the rest of the bolt is stuck inside the hole with nothing to twist it out with. I don't know where to start. Can a bike shop deal with this or will I have to take it to some sort of machinist? Thanks for any help.
Honestly, if you end up having to take it to somebody, I'd take it to a good machine shop before I'd give it to the common bike shop hack or an auto repair center.
If there's any way you can safely disassemble the part to where you expose that bolt and have something that you might be able to grab onto with pliers, then try that out. If you have to open the caliper body to do that, you might not want to do it after all since that means new rubber parts will be necessary. If you can't make the broken bolt more easily accessible, and if you want to give it a try yourself, then pick up a screw extractor from the hardware or auto shop. Be aware that you can really make things worse or ruin the part if you do things incorrectly or if Murphy's Law just happens to make an appearance (which happens a lot with broken bolts). In addition to the extractor, it would be best to have a left-hand drill bit of the proper size and to use it in a drill press rather than in a hand drill. Wear safety goggles, too, just in case the extractor shatters. And be sure to use a center punch before you start to drill.....if possible, file off the end of the bolt so that it's flat.
Many machine shops have a flat rate for bolt extraction and will only charge you more if it becomes a real chore. $20 to $40 is normal depending on what it is.
Good luck with it.....and next time don't torque it so much and be sure to use some grease or teflon tape on the threads. If you have access to a torque wrench and practice with it, you might be surprised at how much you/most of us way overtorque things.
