Blade Pocket
Another Ken Onion Designed knife from Kershaw. Ken Onion is one of the hottest custom knife makers in the industry these days with his custom peices fetching over $1800US a pop. Even his Mid-Tech (semi-custom) peices pull in about $1000US or even more.
He teamed up with Kershaw several years ago to introduce his knives to the other part of the population that would never have a chance to try those knives out... and so far its been a success. So far he has collaborated with Kershaw for over a dozen models, including the best-selling Chive.
The Whirlwind is one of the earliest models of the Speedsafe knife, and has the Onion holes in the blade. It is a very well designed knife with a comfortable handle. The handle is Plastic (polymide), with Steel embedded liners which house the speed safe system. The Speedsafe Technology allows the knife to spring open similar to an automatic after you open the knife approximately 1/8", but is legal to carry in Canada and most states except for Michigan I believe. Very high gadget factor if ya ask me!

As you can see, the steel is 440A, which is a entry level steel when it comes to Cutlery. It is decent performing when heat treated properly, but to the knife aficionado, it is a low-end steel. It requires more maintenance, but will sharpen up very easily.
The knife is a great value at only $40 or so at many online stores now that it has been out for a while. I have one and also its brother knife the Blackout, which is nearly identical except the blade is black and has no holes in it.
The knife opens via a thumbstud and has a clip mounted for Tip Down carry... not my personal favourite, but acceptable. This knife is a popular knife among non-collectors due to its very reasonable price and good looks. I would recommend this knife highly at this price point along with Spyderco's Endura, which may have better blade steel, but lacks in gadget factor.
Overall, its a good knife. The polymide handles are a bit cheap, but steel liners give it some heft. Blade steel is a bit mediocre, but still acceptable. Overall its a fanstastic deal since it rocks in every other department including comfort and great usable blade shape. The Hollow ground blade is quite thin and will take a very sharp edge.
