Gas Stove..smell gas and the top is hot..worried..?
So I just moved into an apt. a few weeks ago. This is the first time i have ever had a gas stove..(gas stoves scare me =/) So yesterday I noticed a smell of gas (or like butane)over the stove and the middle of the stove was really hot. Is this normal?..I dont remember smelling the gas before or the heat..but maybe its just me. I called the manteinece man and they said they would be over. My question is how dangerous is this...could this thing just explode?

Your pilot light might need to be re-lit. On the top of the stove and towards the middle, you have two pilot lights. They need to be on constantly, or else you begin to smell gas. Usually, there are two little openings over the pilot lights and you can see down into the stove and see a flame. If not, then it needs to be re-lit. It's good you called your maintenance man, let him relight it for you and show you what to do if it happens again. If you ever smell a very strong odor of gas, that could be dangerous. You would need to leave your house immediately. If the odor is very strong there could be an explosion, to answer your question.
As far as the heat you feel, that's probably the heat generated from the pilot lights.
