Camp Grill

All stores promote a camping tent or other camping gear as the best we must have, only to find out a week later we should have bought another tent recommended that would have met our needs much better. It is all about preparation and research.
Let us use a family camping and a couple hiking as examples. A family camp trip will generally require gear that provides comfort, a good camp set up and sometimes everything but the kitchen sink (nothing wrong with home comforts).
The couple hiking will be looking for quality gear that meets there basic needs, but must be lighter, quick and easy to set up, fitting well in the backpacks to make life easier on the move.
While a family will be happy to take a camp cooler, camping furniture and a good stock of food because comfort takes priority over weight when you are car camping. The hiking couple will be looking for ways to reduce the amount of gear to take or at least buy lightweight, compact and practical essentials.
I would not advise deciding where you plan to go then just go out spending your money on camping gear. Try a little more preparation first!
A great way to prepare for a camping trip is to start by knowing your campground, hiking trails and weather conditions for the time of year and area for your planned adventures. Use a camping list of camping supplies that will be needed, and decide if your equipment needed is essential. Remember essentials mean what your needs are, we all have different needs. Some campers may want to camp lightweight and minimalistic, whilst others may take everything needed for comfort.
After researching your campsite or trails that you would like to go. Review your checklist of essentials needed. The wife may decide she would like more creature comforts. Or you realise that your current camping equipment will not be suitable. We just go back to planning the trail or campsite that seems more suitable or if our budget allows we decide to buy new suitable gear.
When you find your camping check list matches the type of camping trip planned you will be meeting your camping needs and half the battle of preparation and choosing gear is done. The outcome will be a happy memorable trip that you look forward to repeating again.
Brilliant, you now know where you are going and what camping gear you need. Sometimes we have to compromise with what we want to take camping because it may just not be practical or affordable. If you have prepared well and all parties know the budget for what is practical to take, everyone should be happy.
Then, the next step is buying the best camping gear. This is the second half of preparation and takes a little research or knowledge. These are some of our common questions we ask when deciding to spend the money we have saved for a trip.
What is the best camp stove for hiking?
Do I need a 3 season or 4 season tent?
What is lightweight camping equipment?
Would this be a better sleeping bag for my kids?
How long will my new camping gear last?
How Much should i spend?
Where to buy from?
After asking some of these type of questions you decide you will not have the right gear, and do not want to spend this much money. Time to go back to choosing a different trip.
The internet offers a wealth of information for the gear needed by others that have camped the path before us. Reviews and opinions will differ about the gear that worked for them. However, the camp community offer some great tips and advice that helps deciding the best gear to take for your type of trip. Independent from the stores selling camping equipment.

Going On Picnic/Overnight Camping - Need Portable & Easy Side Dishes?
We're going camping tomorrow and wanted to bring food that is premade so we can just heat it up at night on the camping site grill.
So far I made ribs and baked beans. Any other ideas for some yummy sides? Please post link to recipe. Thanks.
I would be happy to give you some recipes & will include some below....things that don't need to be heated...however, at this late point, I would say, just run to the market & pick out some things pre-made in the deli & produce departments. Potato salad, mac salad, fresh fruit, etc. Maybe grab some brownies or cookies too.
But here's something you can make, if you really insist!
Best Ever Wild Rice Picnic Salad
1 Package Uncle Ben’s long grain & wild rice (cooked, as directed on package & then chilled)
¼ cup vegetable oil
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
¼ cup onion, finely chopped
1 cup celery, sliced
5 radishes, sliced
1 cup cucumber, diced
Combine oil & vinegar, stir into chilled rice. Add onion & celery; mix well. Chill. Stir in radishes & cucumber before serving.
Coleslaw, my way
1one pound bag “Ready Pac Coleslaw” (or about 8 cups finely chopped cabbage)
½cup chopped onion
1cup sour cream
½cup mayonnaise
1tablespoon sugar
1teaspoon seasoned salt
1teaspoon dry mustard
¼teaspoon black pepper
1tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 – Combine cabbage & sugar in large bowl & toss. Set aside for about 10 minutes.
2 – Combine remaining ingredients in medium bowl.
3 – Pour dressing over cabbage mixture & toss.
4 – Chill & then serve. Sprinkle with paprika, if desired.
Deviled Eggs
4 hard boiled eggs
¼teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1tablespoon mayonnaise
1teaspoon lemon juice
Speckof mustard
Few grains of salt
½teaspoon onion, finely chopped (or onion salt)
Cut eggs lengthwise. Remove yolks.
Mash yolks & blend with remaining ingredients.
Stuff egg white with this mixture, heaping tops generously.
Wrap stuffed halves separately in squares of plastic wrap or waxed paper.
(or, just bring some boiled eggs to have for breakfast?)
And here's a special treat! Travels well in the Rubbermaid container!
Strawberry Trifle
1Pkg Cake mix (yellow or white) – note: you only need 1 layer, so 9 oz mix works!
116 ounce package frozen strawberry halves, thawed
14 serving size package Vanilla pudding (prepared & chilled)
1cup chilled whipping cream
¼cup sugar
Bake cake in 9x9x2 pans as directed on package. Cool. (If you have used a 2 layer cake, reserve one for another use, or make another trifle?) Cut cake into 8 pieces; split each piece horizontally. Arrange half the pieces in a 2-quart glass serving bowl (or use a 9 cup Rubbermaid clear container), cutting the pieces to fit bowl. Pour half the strawberries (with syrup) over cake, spread 1 cup of the pudding over the strawberries. Repeat with remaining cake pieces, strawberries & pudding. Cover and chill at least 4 hours.
In chilled bowl, beat the cream & sugar until stiff (or just buy Cool Whip, instead), spread over trifle. Sprinkle with some toasted almonds or garnish with some fresh strawberries, if desired. Spoon into dessert dishes. Makes 8 to 10 servings.
Variation: Banana Trifle:
Substitute devils food cake for yellow. Substitute 2 large bananas for the strawberries. Blend ¾ cup milk into the prepared pudding. You can garnish with halved cherries!
Hope you have a great trip!
