Carabiner Spring
Buckling up in a car has become second-nature in the US, and in many states, it's the law. The increased safety that comes with being properly restrained in your auto during an accident far outweighs the minor inconvenience of remembering to fasten that seat belt. What many people don't think about is restraining their pets when they're riding in the car as well.
Most dogs love to go places with their families, and mine are no exception. In fact, in front of some of my dogs, you need to spell G-O and keep your keys in your pocket, unless you want to start a four-legged riot. Some of them ride very nicely in the car, while some of them will be in your lap, looking out over the steering wheel if they aren't kept where they're supposed to be. For that reason, my guys (and especially our foster dogs) are always restrained when they ride in the car. They stay in their travel crates, or they are otherwise restrained with a collar clip or harness. This keeps everyone in place, and allows the driver to pay attention to the road.
Restraining your dog in the car makes the ride safer for your pet, too. According to the pet safety experts at Bark Buckle UP (barkbuckleup.com), a 60-pound unrestrained dog traveling in a car at 35 miles-per-hour can strike the car interior or windshield with an impact of 2,700 pounds. So, to keep your dog and other passengers safe, consider some of these restraint methods.
The most obvious is a travel crate or pet carrier. The plastic styles work best for the car, and I always try and turn mine backwards so that the dog is pressed against the back or side of the crate and not the door in the event of a sudden stop. Crates for smaller dogs can fit easily on the back seat, but larger dogs will need a vehicle big enough to accommodate a large crate. Some vehicles that have a rear door or hatch can use a pet barrier; a grid that goes wall-to-wall behind the front seats to keep your dog in the back, effectively making the whole back seat or cargo area a dog crate.
When space is an issue, look at a using a harness on your dog when traveling by car. By attaching the harness to the seatbelt in the back seat, you have a quick and easy method for securing your pet. You can purchase special harnesses that have been designed with large pass-through loops for this use, or you can use a large carabiner or D-ring to attach the leash ring of a common walking harness to the seat belt.
And, when you get to your destination, your pet will safely wait for you to release them from the car, limiting their opportunity to spring out of the door and into an unsafe situation.
