It was only in 1872 that the river was named the Columbia after a fur trader's ship that sailed the river. Since the river was renamed it has attracted millions of anglers from various countries of the world. The river is home to vast populations of the mighty Sturgeon and Salmon, but sporting fishermen also come in search of the other species of fish that inhabit the mighty Columbia.
The fishing season officially begins from Memorial Day and continues through the month of June. This is the time of the year the American Shad, known as the "poor mans Salmon" are on the run - or running as it is known. The Shad is believed to be on of the world's best gaming fish. This is because it is one of the fish that can put up quite a fight when the angler tries to land it after hooking it. Anglers can hook and land as many as forty Shad in a single day from the Columbia river.
The best bait to lure the Sturgeon fish include; sand shrimp, smelt and anchovies. The Shad has acquired a reputation of being the most difficult fish to land. It is capable of putting up quite a fight when it is hooked, and most of the time it manages to get away even if it means tearing its mouth where the hook is lodged. The Sturgeon can weigh in at as much as 40 pounds and measure over 5 feet long. It is no wonder that the anger had best be strapped to his seat when reeling this giant. You will have a better chance of hooking your Sturgeon trophy if you plan a fishing trip from May through June any year.

EX) hydroelectricity, etc

well people need RIVERS for everything really. The river flowing downstream could be used for crops/agriculture/irrigation along the way, and would likely be regulated in the form of dams/weirs to suit domestic and other purposes.
The wildlife need the river because a healthy river maintains a healthy ecosystem. There are fish that rely on the river to live (and IF the Columbia river is heavily irrigated this could effect them due to temp changes and terbitity) and if these specific natives were to die, then the birds who use them as a food source would die. And any wildlife they need these birds would die.... al part of a food chain.
If you look in wikipedia theres info regarding farmers and drought on the river. It is important to people in this sense, becasue they rely on this river (as a water source) to grow their crops. Now, if they didnt have this water they couldnt grow these crops. If there wasnt an agricultural business in teh surrounding area, then it is likely no township would have been built there - people depend on the agriculture for jobs. Now, take that away and you take services away from the area (economic flow on effect) - basically there'd be less people living there if there were less jobs, meaning less money is spent in the area, meaning less people live there, there are less schools etc....

The Columbia supports several species of anadromous fish, which migrate between the Pacific Ocean and fresh water tributaries of the river. Coho and Chinook salmon and Steelhead are ocean fish which migrate up the rivers at the end of their life cycles to spawn; White sturgeon, which take 25 years to grow to full size, would typically migrate between the ocean and the upstream habitat several times over the course of their lives.
Water quality is also an important factor in the survival of other wildlife and plants that grow in the Columbia River Basin. The states, Indian tribes, and federal government are all engaged in efforts to restore and improve the water, land, and air quality of the Columbia River Basin and have committed to work together to enhance and accomplish critical ecosystem restoration efforts. A number of important work efforts are currently underway, including Portland Harbor in the Lower Basin, Hanford in the Middle Basin and Lake Roosevelt in the Upper Basin
