Compass Led
One of our top priorities as leaders should be to not only build a great sounding and musically proficient worship team, but an overall healthy one. It doesn't matter if you are starting from scratch, have inherited an existing program, are big or small. You can develop a healthy music ministry. Raise the bar in your music department and watch your team rise up to meet the challenge. Let me share 8 quick steps to developing a healthy team.
#1 - Have a biblically sound purpose for what you are doing. I have found that nothing develops commitment better than giving people a clear sense of purpose. Put it in writing and talk about it often with your team.
#2 - Choose your team carefully. Don't make musical talent or ability the only criteria for choosing members of your team. I have a mantra: "Any drummer is not better than no drummer." It is vital that you have auditions and personal interviews for anyone who wants to join the worship team. This will help prevent problems before they arise.
#3 - Develop a "Team" mentality with your group. Don't allow any hint of a "diva" spirit to have a place on your team. It will kill it. Tell your team often that everyone is important and needed. Use words like "us" and avoid words like "I" or "me".
#4 - Build people, not a program. People want to know that you genuinely care about them, not just what they can do for you. Their well being must always be more important than what you can get out of them. People that know you truly care for them will be there for you.
#5 - Know where you are going. If you don't have a sense of direction people won't follow you. This doesn't mean you have all the answers and have it all figured out. It means that you have spent time seeking God for direction and are trying to follow Him. This builds trust and trust builds commitment. If your team knows that you are being led by the Holy Spirit they will trust you.
#6 - Be a shepherd, not just a director. In other words you need to not only lead them musically, but spiritually. Make sure your rehearsals aren't just about practicing music but building character. Visit them in the hospital. Call them when they miss a rehearsal.
#7 - Let others lead alongside you. Encourage and develop leaders in your team. Perhaps someone is better at arranging or rehearsing vocals. Let them do it for you. Remember, you can't do it alone.
#8 - Let God be in control at all times. If you let Him lead you, you'll be amazed at how much easier and more enjoyable ministry will be. How about instead of trying to get God to bless what we are doing, we find out what God is already blessing and do that. Easier said than done, I know, but it takes all the pressure off of us to make things happen. Learn to follow Him and let Him make it all happen.
