Cot Camping
When making vacation plans for a family, there are several factors you must take into consideration. One of the most common problems families face is finding enough room to fit the family into. Families on a budget will often put some of their kids on a couch or floor when they run out of beds. Seek out family vacation help before you make your travel plans. There's no need to cram your family into a little hotel room, when there are hotels who offer suites, or even a discount when you book two rooms.
If money is an issue, of course you don't want to pay for two rooms. This results in many families checking in saying there are four in the family, and then they sneak in the other two or three kids. It's unfortunate that hotels these days don't make any attempt to accommodate large families. They probably don't think it's their problem that some people need family vacation help.
It might be of better value to families to rent a condo, or at least a suite in a hotel. Many suites offer two rooms, a living area and a separate bedroom with two double beds. That works out nicely for a large family, as the living area usually consists of a fold down sofa, and everybody is comfortable and happy. The condos, of course boast of ample space, and even have full kitchens. But when looking to rent a condo, you need to know where to look if you are on a budget. Many timeshares are available off season, and some websites even sell condos at a discount rate when some of them will go unused.
Your only other option when booking a room on some of the hotel discount websites, is to just take what they give you, which is usually two double beds, and then for a few dollars more you can order a cot when you get there, but that still doesn't alleviate the problem of a crowded hotel room, or privacy for Mom and Dad. If you're on a budget, then you will have to settle for a crowded hotel room and make the best of it. But for those of you who can afford the next level of comfort, then the suites are the best solution for family vacation help.
If your vacation plans call for a couple very full sightseeing days, and you only need a place to lay your head at night, then you probably won't mind the overcrowded issue. You will gladly crawl over each other in order to save a few bucks. If you have a family that gets along, this probably won't be a problem. But there are some families that get along better the further apart they are. Oh well...it's your vacation - enjoy!

We are going on a three day snow shoe hike in Colorado, any advise on camping warmly?
We will be in the rocky mountain national park in mid may, so there will still be plenty of snow on the ground. I have plenty of good warm weather clothes, an external frame back pack to carry plenty of gear and a decent kelty sleeping bag, rated to 0 degrees (i think) my big question is if any one has suggestions on whether or not to use a foam mat to sleep on, a cot, or any ideas on what could be useful after the we get to the camp site, like tips on best location to put up the tent....or any advise someone has at all on cold weather camping. Thanks!!

Stay out from underneath trees with your tent.
Use the CLOSED cell foam mat, whether you use the cot or not.
