Cover Tarp
If your boat lives outside, keeping your boat covered is a must to protect your investment. The sun can cause fade damage to your boats upholstery. The rain can of course cause water damage as well as sagging from the weight of pooled water inside the boat. When your boat is left uncovered it becomes a trash receptacle for all kinds of debris, bugs and leaves flying around. Protecting your boat with a properly fitted properly secured tarp is the way to prevent this type of mess.Â
The first step is to measure the boat's length and width to get the correct size tarp. Remember the old adage measure twice, cut once or in this case buy once. It is best to completely measure the boat two separate times and compare the measurements before you spend the money on a good tarp. Measure the boat from front to back at the longest point, then measure from side to side at the widest point of the boat. You should also measure how tall the boat is. Remember front to back is a straight measurement but you need to allow extra length for the tarp to rise over seats or roofs and fall back to the rail of the boat. The best way to do this is to get help and physically measure from the front up over the highest point on the boat to the back with a measuring tape. Measure the same way from side to side on the boat. When you have the physical length and width measured, add length to each to bring the edge of the tarp down to a level below the top of the boat. You want the edge of the tarp above the trailer and below the top edge of the boat, in order to tie it down well.
Choose a heavy or super heavy duty tarp for your boat. The better quality tarp you choose will save you money in the long run. Getting a tarp with grommets every 18 inches or less will also save money in the long run. Grommets at 18 inches instead of 36 inches help to spread the wind stress across the entire tarp to prevent ripping and allow for tighter and smoother tie down so water does not pool on the tarp. Selecting the highest quality tarp the first time will save you money in the future by preventing you from having to buy a new tarp after every hard storm.

Is it good to cover a firewood pile to keep it dry?
We have a pile of firewood which gets wet when it rains or snows. I'm considering covering it with a tarp to keep it dry. The wood wasn't completely dry to begin with, so I'm worried it won't dry out any more if the sun isn't shining on it on sunny days. But it seems like covering it would be better. Which way should I go...covered or uncovered? By the way...I'm in Iowa, so the snow should be coming soon.
If you cover it, you need to make sure you do not cover it completely as when the winter comes the temperature will drop and the cold air will be dry -- even when snowing.
You need to allow the cold air to circulate at the bottom of the pile to allow it to dehydrate that way.
I would suggest having some air space between the wood and the ground if that is possible, otherwise the wood at the bottom of the pile can still soak up dampness from the soil and take longer to dry out.
