Dakota Backpacker
For many of those who enjoy traveling around the world, we all know all too well how the world is rapidly getting smaller. Places which I used to visit on a regular basis in Europe, more specifically Eastern Europe, are now overrun by tourists and have also become very expensive as a result. I've always preferred going off the beaten track and indeed many backpackers prefer this but they often don't know where to start.

Here are my personal recommendations if you want to get off the beaten track in Europe;

Although quickly getting busier, much of Romania is still relatively untouched by tourism. Although there are towns in Transylvania which are now very busy during the summer months, the region is still full of quaint villages and undiscovered getaways. It is also a great bargain destination and not difficult to get to with regular cheap flights going to cities such as Cluj-Napoca.

Ukraine is also a great place to go now that has recently opened up and European and American citizens no longer need visas to enter the country. Tourism is gradually being promoted in Ukraine now but it is still in its very early stages. I have spent a great deal of time in the wonderful city if Lviv, a city of about 700,000 located in the west of Ukraine. It is actually very easy to get to, being an overnight bus or train from a number of Eastern European cities such as Warsaw or Prague.

If you are interested in getting an idea of what life must have been like during the Soviet era, then a visit to Minsk, the capital of Belarus is well worth it. There is absolutely no tourist infrastructure to speak of in Belarus yet the country is full of attractive towns and places of interest. The capital itself is highly Stalinist when it comes to architecture and statues of Lenin and hammer and sickle motifs can be found everywhere. You will find this place a challenge to travel to but if you are interested in this sort of thing, then you will find it well worth it.

Another place which is truly off the beaten track in Eastern Europe is the country of Moldova. Even more so, you can check out the breakaway Republic of Transnistria. Chişinău, the capital of Moldova, although having very little to attract the average tourist, is a great party city and if you enjoy good nightlife, then you won't be disappointed.

Top two are useful yet pricey. bottom two are more of a novelty
I have a garmin 60cx GPS very accurate in giving me directions, position and altitude. Having one of the high gear watches would be a plus for monitoring changing weather conditions along with my gps. The other two are just watches one with a magnifier not much use there maybe as a fire starter tool. I second the other two suggestions as far as price goes.
Would I buy any of the above, probably not I am pretty good at reading weather conditions and the other need would be for downhill skiing which I no longer do. Having the altimeter gives you a quick idea on the slopes of where your at and how fast you went down the hill. REI has some reviews on the high gear items
