Emergency First

The popular reality show "Lost", which may have fantastical elements, still is an accurate example of the kind of troubles faced when stranded on a deserted island. Though the chances of you ever crash landing or getting marooned on a deserted island are slim, they are still there. Here are a few things you can do, should you get stranded on an island.
Stay in groups and stay close
If you're not alone and are stranded with a group of people, then your first task is to make sure everybody stays together and don't wander off. Islands are ripe with not only vegetation, but also dangers. These can take the form of predators or even poisonous vegetation. Hence, try not to spread out across the island on your own, have someone with you. Also, make a base camp, preferably near the wreckage of a plane or if not that then as close to the beach as possible.
Assign roles
The good thing about a group is everybody has their specialities. People with medical training should come forward and announce themselves. Similarly, if anybody has any outdoor survival skills, they should make it their responsibility to set up the basics, such as shelter and food. Similarly, engineers with electrical experience can try and figure out if they can salvage the emergency distress beacon or equipment if there is the wreckage of the crash is nearby.
Supplies
Try and salvage as much supplies as you can. Nearly all ships and planes have disaster kits which contain emergency flares, first aid kids and water. Salvage these and keep them handy. Start making your own supplies also, if you find a source of water, such as rain or a river, then immediately collect it in any containers that you have.
Be civil
If you're not a part of any of these activities, then your job is to stay civil and focused. If you panic and start to incite panic in others, then you're doing the survivors no good. A positive frame of mind and a teamwork attitude can go a much longer way in such situations, in fact, that is what counts in a life and death situation such as this. Also, try and maintain such a spirit in others as well. If you see someone upset or getting out of hand, approach them in a calm manner and try to diffuse the situation by bringing in humor or a lively atmosphere.
Wait to be rescued or go on your own?
Search and rescue missions tend to last only for so long. If you're survived for more than a week or two and search and rescue still haven't found you, best bet is you've been written off as lost at sea. In such cases, you need to start thinking about options for getting off the island, which are limited to just one: building a raft. However, if in the first few days nothing happens, then try and stay in one place, again, close to the wreckage or the beach. Always light a fire and at the first sign of a ship or a plane, use the flares if you have any.

Cheech & Chong
$6.93 Though it sounds like it was conceived and recorded between bong hits inside a college dormitory, Cheech & Chong's 1971 debut album was actually the product of years of comedic honing. In the late 1960s, guitarist Tommy Chong founded a musical/performance art troupe called City Works. The venture was short-lived, but it introduced him to fellow boho-prankster Richard "Cheech" Marin. When City Work... |
