Fire Swedish
Nevada's oldest state park is located one hour north of Las Vegas on I-15. If you feel like getting away from the glitz and hubbub of the city, the Valley of Fire is a place that is so quiet you can actually hear the flies buzzing!
Valley of Fire State Park is bordered by the Lake Mead Recreation Area. The park got its name from the red sandstone formations which are the result of the shifting sand dunes back in the dinosaur days.
The road through the park goes right through the sandstone formations, so you can drive the entire park and enjoy the sights. Or, if you want to stop at one of the many interest points, there is ample parking and places to get out and stretch your legs. I couldn't help myself; I had to wiggle my toes in the red sand. The texture was like icing sugar and the color is the most brilliant rust-red.
Rock climbing is permitted in designated areas. Sandstone formations are amazing for rock climbing. The texture of the surface is like fine sandpaper which makes for excellent traction. We visited the park with Bailey, our little Jack Russell Terrier. She was bounding up and down the formations like a little mountain goat.
To enter the park there is a cost of $6.00 per vehicle. For this small fee, you have access to the entire park and its thoughtful facilities. The road through the park is a pleasure to drive as it is paved and well-maintained. There are several picnic areas with covered picnic tables to give respite from the sun. Public washrooms are also available. The points of interest areas provide lots of parking.
There are lovely camping facilities in the park. These campsites are literally amongst the rock formations making for a most unique experience. The sites all provide shaded tables, grills, water and restrooms. There are areas which accommodate small units, like van conversions and truck and camper units. For more adventurous tenters and backpackers, you can leave the camping area by a footpath and hike further into the wilds to find your perfect camping spot. These smaller sites are $14 per night. The park has recently added big rig sites for $24 per night. The big rig sites are extremely spacious, with many pull-through areas and full hook ups. The vistas from the camp sites are spectacular.
Something about the quietness and solitude of the park quickly melts away the city-rush frame of mind. We found ourselves enjoying the calm of the day. The park hosts many visitors, however we never found ourselves in a long line of traffic or in a crowd.
Even though you are out in the middle of a desert, you may find a reminder that Las Vegas is still never far away. We stopped at a remote viewpoint and were amused to see that here amongst the cactus, red sand and buzzing flies, there was a black stretch limousine. Out of the limo popped two sightseers, each with a glass of champagne. Only in Vegas!
