In 1994, I retired from my job of driving a bus to work full-time in the business I had built... and I've never gone back.
One of the realizations I had early in the game was that marketing success was 100% dependent on my ability to find targeted people who wanted my product. Over the years, I've tried a lot of different marketing methods to find those people. Here and there, something has worked really well. Unfortunately, most people want to buy leads, and that's like the old Jim Croce song, You Don't Mess Around With Jim:
You don't tug on Superman's cape
You don't spit into the wind
You don't pull the mask off the old Lone Ranger
And you don't mess around with Jim
When you buy leads, you are 100% spitting into the wind.
You are way better off coming up with your own marketing leads. The problem is, when you're putting together that system, there are a lot of moving parts that you need to get right. It's complicated.
What I have discovered is that you can really simplify the process by using Facebook. I don't think you can successfully sell anything on Facebook, but you can sure find your target market and join related FB groups and get to know them and build relationships with them. And then if you just have a link on your Facebook site where they can opt into your list, you probably have all you need.
After that, it's just a matter of tweaking what's on your Facebook profile and interacting with everybody who "Friends" you, writing on their walls, being sociable, and creating a personna they'd like to get to know. It takes a bit of time to build the "know, like and trust", but you sure won't find a better way to generate really valuable targeted marketing leads at zero cost.
