The Samsung CLP 500 printer was designed for small offices though since it does not have networking capabilities it is really a perfect printer for home and personal use. All paper trays including both input and output trays can hold up to 250 pages of paper. Small offices will go through 250 pages quite easily so they will have to constantly be filling the paper tray.
Once you have found a home for the printer it is best to stay there, as the CLP 500 is quite hefty, weight 35 kg when fully loaded. It tends to print graphics better then text though the differences are minute.
Color printing can produce 5 pages per minute and black and white printing has a high speed of 20 pages per minute. When printing the highest quality color printouts the printer slows to 2 pages per minute. The LCD screen and available buttons make it very easy to use.
It is possible to upgrade the Samsung CLP 500 printer to have Ethernet and wireless networking abilities as the standard model can only connect to another computer using a USB cable or parallel port. However if you want networking capabilities then it may be worthwhile to upgrade to the CLP 500N model. You will have to compare the different in price. The printer will connect to both PC and Mac computers.
If you tend to print a lot of photos and graphics then this printer is highly recommended. Graphics are very clear and crisp and are just a bit better when compared to the text printing. This may not matter much but it will depend on what you tend to print and the type of quality you need in your printouts. The text will appear pale and less crisp when compared side to side with graphics printouts.
The starter toner cartridge will only last about 2,000 pages so you will need to purchase a new Samsung CLP 500 printer toner cartridge fairly quickly. The full size toner cartridge will last for an average of 7,500 pages. The printer uses a 4-color toner system. The memory on the machine is quite high, 65 MB, and can be expanded further to 192 MB for an additional cost.
The printer is compatible with many different Linux systems including, Linux Mandrake, Debian Linux, Slackware Linux, Caldera Open Linux, Red Hat Linux, TurboLinux, and SuSe Linux. Linux operating systems are used a lot in businesses. It is also compatible with Microsoft Windows 96 or later and Apple MacOS 8.6 or later. It can print on various media, even custom sized papers. As long as the paper is below the maximum width and length (8.5 x 14 inches) then you will be bale to print on the media.
The Samsung CLP 500 toner is excellent, particularly for its price range. It produces high quality printouts quickly and quietly. The toner needed is the Samsung toner. You will get plenty of use out of this printer and it will meet all of your small office or home printing needs.
