Hiking Harness
In rock climbing, the discipline of bouldering has grown massively in importance over the last 15 years or so. Of course, some rock climbers have always bouldered; witness the sepia photographs of august Victorian gentlemen competing on boulders in England's Lake District and North Wales' Snowdonia. And bouldering is an activity which certainly pre-dates climbing with ropes. What young child doesn't want to clamber over rocks, lurching from handhold to handhold, transposed with joy?
In the world of rock climbing, bouldering has undoubtedly benefited from two relatively recent innovations - bouldering mats and spotters. With bouldering mats, all you have to do is position them correctly underneath the boulder problem. (Although please be careful - a lot of people have fallen off, missed the edges of bouldering mats and still managed to hurt themselves.) However, with spotting, I've lost count of the number of photographs I've seen featuring world-class climbers with armies of concerned spotters underneath, who are - pardon my bluntness - doing it all wrong.
Almost 100% of rock climbing spotters have their fingers separated, outstretched and splayed. Should a falling body land on such an outstretched finger, it stands a good change of snapping like a twig. The anguished howls of the owner will be of scant solace to the boulderer, who will be free to continue an unimpeded descent.
I find that the best way to spot a boulderer is to close my fingers together, tuck my thumb beside them and cup my hands slightly. This way, a falling boulderer will land on my cupped hands, not on my splayed out fingers. There's far less chance of damage to my fingers (they're already damaged enough, thank you!) And cupped hands are a far better instrument for diverting a fall.
Actually, that past point is massively important. You're not necessarily trying to stop a fall (which will often only be a metre or so), you're trying to avoid the fall having dangerous consequences by landing on something nasty or just landing badly. Most of the time, you're simply aiming to guide a falling boulderer back to a place of almost total safety - i.e. the bouldering mat.
The last thing any rock climber wants are broken fingers. If you break your nose, well, that's not very nice but, pain permitting, you can still climb. If you break your fingers though, climbing becomes pretty tricky. So believe me, any tip which spares your fingers from danger is well worth checking out.

How do I get my 8 month old Brittany to focus on me and walk nicely on his leash while we're hiking?
He's generally a great dog and though Brittanys are described as a highly active breed, he calms nicely while in the house. He is also learning basic commands nicely while we're inside and distractions are minimal, and even did a fantastic job at our obedience class last week. However, it's a constant struggle to walk him particularly in the woods. I realize he's a hunting breed with strong instincts and can understand why he's distracted. I talk to him, praise him, bring good treats and stop when he gets too excited. What else can I do (aside from buying anti pulling collars or harnesses) to help him learn to walk with me not drag me down the paths? As an intelligent hunting dog I should be able to train him to attend to me, right?
I also have a Brittany, but he is now 4 years old. Everyone here has pretty much said with age your dog will grow out of this, but I'm sorry to say that most likely she won't. In the house my dog is as laid back as ever. He does enjoy playing with toys, but for the most part he just sleeps. As soon as he is outside though he goes into hunting mode. He wants to catch every single bird, squirrel, and rabbit in town. For the first year of my dog's life, I had the mindset that I could control him and he would grow out of the pulling. I had been doing obedience classes all along with him and by the time he was a year old, I gave in. I couldn't handle the pulling anymore. No matter what treat I had in my hand the birds are always better. I bought a Gentle Leader which is the head halter used by my training school. It is just a training tool that helps you get control and the attention you need from your dog. Since you are already working on attention focusing while outside, the Gentle Leader will just be an aid in helping your dog learn to pay attention to you while you are walking. My dog still gets excited and will pull if a squirrel gets too close, but I can walk him without his Gentle Leader now without him pulling me the whole way. This does take a ton of work on my part though. I am constantly working with him when I walk doing turns, stays, waits, downs, stands and sits, stops, and many more things while I walk. I learned to walk with him this way after taking a rally-o class. Rally-O is a fun type of obedience that dogs and owners compete in. The point of it is to keep your dog's tail wagging. When I walk, I have to be upbeat, fast moving, and keeping my dog engaged with a lot of different activities.
If you choose to use the Gentle Leader as an aid, it will make your training a lot easier, but if you really don't want to use one, then I recommend working at home on some 'obedience trial' type commands such as right and left turns, by me and around (finishes where your dog comes around you back to heel position in one and beside you and turns to the direction you are facing in the other). When you walk, make sure you are giving your dog lots of commands. My walks often include me telling my dog to 'go' where he is allowed ahead of me on a loose leash, but then I make sure he is still paying attention by calling him back (recalls), asking him back into heel position (through finishes, by me and around), and tell him 'this way' or 'right here' which are my commands for move to the sound of my voice and follow me. I have also taught my dog 'right' and 'left' as full circle turns and also when he is in the lead if I give a direction he will go in that direction. This way I know he is still listening. Make sure you are also moving quickly. When you go to slow your dog will get bored. If you are moving fast your dog will want to know what to do next and will be watching you for the next command. Giving speed commands, fast, slow and normal (I use easy as the command) keep your dog guessing. Abrupt halts where your dog needs to be watching you at all times are also useful. If your dog gets out of hand, just stop and wait until she returns to heel position. This could take several seconds, but she will work through the process and learn that by doing a certain behaviour (returning to you and loosening the leash) she gets to go on her walk again.
I know it is a lot to think about when you are walking. I chose to use the Gentle Leader because it helped me to teach him to pay attention, and on days when I don't have the energy to be working hard for at least an hour on a walk, it helps me to control my dog.
