Hiking Hiker

The small Canary Island of La Palma is a hiker's paradise and yet unknown to many travellers. The island is crisscrossed with 1200 kilometres hiking trails going through some of the most beautiful landscapes you can imagine. The origin of the trails goes back to prehistoric time, when they were established by the first inhabitants of the island and served as the only means of transport and communications. Later, when the Spaniards conquered the island they expanded the network of footpaths and it connected all the villages with each other and connected the villages with the capital, Santa Cruz.
With the advent of the car and roads the footpaths fell into disuse, but in the sixties they were rediscovered by tourists and they are now very popular with both tourists and the local population. The Government has upgraded, numbered and marked them all. There are now 73 marked hiking paths of different length. The long distance routes are over 50 kilometres, but divided into shorter sections; the short routes are less than 50 kilometres in length and can be covered in one day, while the local paths are shorter than 10 kilometres.
All the paths will give the hiker a fantastic experience of the nature of La Palma, but some of them are special and a must for the hiking visitor. In the middle of the island is a huge erosion crater, the Caldera; it is the biggest in the world of its type and was declared a National Park in 1954. Inside the crater are no roads, only walking paths. One hiking trail leads into the centre while you can leave the crater following a different trail. It can be done in one day. The route passes through woods with a vary varied vegetation; in the centre the trail crosses the only permanent river on the Canary Islands (where you can take a swim); and the path out goes through the ravine made by the rainwater over thousands of years. In the centre is also a campsite for those wishing to spend more time there and explore other trails within the crater.
Another outstanding hike is the path to the Marcos and Cordero springs in the northeast of the island. The first half of the trail is alongside a water canal built hundreds of years ago to bring water from the springs to the communities below. The path goes through 13 tunnels built to accommodate the canal. After having reached the springs in an altitude of 1400m the trail leads down through another ravine covered with laurel forest.
The trail around the crater rim is a very impressive walk. You literally walk on top of the world passing the highest point on the island of 2,426m. From the trail you can look down the crater to one side and down to the rest of the island to the other, and in the horizon you will always see the ocean.
From the crater rim trail another beautiful tour will take you south over the volcanoes to the southern tip of the island. The trail takes you past some of the volcanoes that were active recently (they are inactive now, don't worry), and through a lava landscape as barren as a moonscape; the way the whole island must have looked at the beginning of its existence.
Having done these four you still have 69 more routes to chose from.
Hiking on La Palma is no more difficult than mountain hiking anywhere else in the world. The island is one of the most mountainous islands in the world and the scenery is probably one of the most beautiful. And after the hike there are plenty of beaches where you can wash off the mountain dust.
The author, Bjarne Jensen is a resident of La Palma and deeply interested in everything concerning the island. In order to spread the knowledge of the beautiful island he has created the website: http://www.holidayislandlapalma.co.uk
what items might hikers recieve from people living on the hiking trail?
Hiking trail
Well, it varies. Most people living on a hiking trail are glad to socialize and help out a traveller. On the other hand, some people like their privacy and tend to give you the cold shoulder. In either case, if you're well prepared for a hike ie. food, clothing, tent, cooking supplies and personal items, very rarely should you ask for assistance (unless you are stupid enough to forget your sleeping bag or matches!). Generally, if you are stuck plan ahead. Be polite and don't go knocking at the door at 2 in the morning unless it's really serious like a snake bite or an accident with severe loss of blood.
You might expect to receive assistance with maps and directions or the occasional cup of coffee but people are hesitant to give out food or lodging. If you're lucky, they might even let you use their phone.
As a rule, pack smart so you don't have to rely on the kindess of strangers to get you out of a situation.
Hope this helps!
