Me and my three friends are traveling across the U.S. and wondering about hiking laws pertaining to streets?
We know of the risks involved in hiking, however we cannot seem to find legal information about hiking next to highways and streets. We want to know:
1: Is it illegal to use public highways and roads as a 'trail.'
2: If so, what are the consequences of doing such.
Note: We are NOT planning on hitchhiking.
You wouldn't be able to hike along expressways in most places. But you should be able to hike along a regular state or US highway or a local street, since people are permitted to walk along side these as long as they are facing traffic.
