Led Lantern
Once you have made the decision to begin studying Ikebana, it is important to have the right equipment. Scissors, kenzan, and appropriate containers for your arrangements make up the essentials you will need to begin. Here we will highlight the basics you will want to have on hand before taking a class or attempting Ikebana from one of the many books available.
Scissors
There are many special scissors or shears designed for cutting flowers for Ikebana. Most important is to find a pair that works best for you and is comfortable. Many high quality stainless steel scissors are made in Japan; however China produces many very good quality scissors which will provide many years of use at a much cheaper price. To care for your scissors, it is a good idea to rub them with a small amount of oil after use to avoid rust.
Kenzan
Kenzan are the needlepoint holders needed to hold the flowers and branches in place. They have a base of varying sizes and shapes with needle-like spikes rising up out of the base. Choose heavy kenzan because they will be more stable after the flowers are in place, it is also better to use a larger rather than smaller kenzan for added stability.
Saw
It is helpful to have a small saw to use when the branches are too thick to cut with scissors. There are special folding saws made especially for Ikebana or you can use a small fine-toothed saw from the hardware store. Of note:Japanese saws cut on the pull stroke rather than the push stroke of a western saw. A Japanese saw therefore offers more control than the traditional western saw.
Containers
There are many types of containers used especially for Ikebana arrangements. If you are studying with the Ohara School (the most popular) you will need a basic Moribana container which is oval or rectangular in shape. If your budget allows, a half moon container is suggested as it is used in many different types of Ohara arrangements.
Various Other Necessities
A kenzan repair tool is a small device used to straighten the pins in the kenzan should they be bent by the arrangement. It is also used to clean the kenzan after use.
Wire is used to bind the arrangements and comes in a variety of colors and sizes. #30 is recommended, in green, as it is the most versatile color.
A medium sized bowl to fill with water to cut the materials under water.
A water sprayer will be useful to keep the flowers fresh while preparing the arrangement since the flowers absorb water through the leaves and stems. It can also be used when you complete the design, to wash off any dust or debris. A specialty Ikebana sprayer also includes a small pump which can inject water into the stems of the flowers to keep them looking fresher longer.
