Light White
Light therapy kills a certain type of slow growing bacteria that create acne and shrinks the sebaceous glands which cuts back on sebum reduction. The slow growing bacteria are called Propionibacterium acnes and it creates chemicals called poryphyrins. This is what the light therapy affects. When the poryphyrins react to the light they neutralize the bacteria. When the bacteria is gone, so is the acne it causes.
The light that is shined in your face is constructed of light emitting diodes (LED).It is not a hot light and will not burn you - but you do have to cover your eyes. The light won't make your face red and it will not irritate your skin. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes and you will likely have a regime of eight treatments - two a week for four weeks. The cost is around $800 for the full treatment on average. Sessions cost around $50 to $150 so the cost could be higher or lower.
You might have to wait for a month or two before you see the full results but you will notice a difference within a matter of days. The good news is that the light therapy typically clears up about 70 percent of your lesions.
An aspect that appeals to many people is that light therapy is drug-free.
There are machines for home use and they cost around $200-$300 and you only have to use them for a few minutes at a time. However, it is important to really know what you are doing to get the maximum benefits. There is also a pulsed light and heat energy (LHE) type of light therapy. It uses heat in addition to the light and has fast results. It is best used for milder forms of acne.
There is also a light and laser therapy. Laser therapy has been around for a long time. It does zap your acne and because it goes deeper than just light, it can reach deep enough to remove some of the scarring. It also has the blue light effect that reduces the oil production and destroys the negative effects of Propionibacterium acne.
Light therapy not only works but it comes in a range of formats from home use to laser. If the usual topical treatments don't help, this particular approach may very well be worth considering. Before you go out and buy a home machine, check with your doctor. It is extremely successful but there are some rare cases that it does not help much. Make sure your acne is the type that will respond to it.

I'm doing a Science Fair Project that involves measuring white light. I know I have to use a white light meter, which I can just get from my teacher, but what unit can you use to describe the amount of white light?
The SI unit for light intensity is the Candela.
