Being prepared doesn't mean you're over-zealous, or soon to be labeled a survivalist by the neighborhood watch. All it means is that you are ready to take some kind of action or have some necessities ready in the event of disaster. That's where your bug out bag will come in handy.
Here's how to set up a basic bug out bag. Take an old backpack and empty it out. Any backpack will do, but the bigger and tougher it is, the better off you will be if you ever have to use it. Fill that bag with emergency gear and then put it in your closet, or somewhere equally accessible. If there is an emergency, take it out and use it if you have the need. Put it back when everything is back to normal.
Are you wondering what kind of emergency gear you need to put in your bug out bag? It's up to you, and your specific needs. Ask yourself the following questions. How many people will it need to sustain? Where will I need to go? What is the outside environment like in my region? Will I need shelter? Answer those questions - and any others that pop into your mind - and then fill your bag appropriately.
In addition to your specific needs, there are some basic things that you should always have in a bug out bag. Something for warmth, food and drink, a flashlight with batteries, a first aid kit, and a knife. Any pocket knife will do, so long as it will cut rope, jeans, or bandages. Even the little blade on the average multi-tool will work fine. When putting food in your bug out bag, your best bet is to find some military rations (MREs), or some camping rations. Use factory-sealed water bottles, or boxed survival water for your drink. Any flashlight with extra batteries should work fine, but a heavy-duty Mag-Lite would be best. They are cheap, durable, and bright. With a first aid kit, you get what you pay for, so try to find something that will meet your potential needs. The warmth factor really depends on your environment. A simple windbreaker might be fine for some, but others may need wool sweaters, heated socks, and an arctic-grade sleeping bag.
Emergencies happen, and if you are prepared for them, you might have some smoother sailing. After all, if you don't have to worry about where you're going to get your next meal, you can focus on the crisis at hand. Construct a bug out bag that will meet your needs, and keep it ready to go at a moment's notice.
