Is the holiday season filling you with joy and excitement, or does it flood you with fears and anxieties? The pressure to create the perfect holiday can be a source of tremendous stress and extinguish whatever 'magic' that's left of the season.

Let us put joy back into the festive season by clearing some of the common myths that can ruin our holiday mood.

1. The Year-end Holidays Hype

The hype around the holidays is way out of proportion to what they really are. The media has made us feel that the year-end holidays are so important that you must either be an uncaring individual or an alien from outer space if you don't decorate your home, attends lots of parties, drink bottles of alcohol, or hand out gifts to everyone you know. The end result? A holiday season that's busier, more expensive and more stressful than any other festivals in the year.

But, if you stop and think about the holidays, you'll find that they're really no different from any other days in the year. We are the one who attach special significance to them and pile ourselves with unrealistic expectations.

Many of us also try too hard to recapture the holiday experience we had during childhood. But however hard we try, the truth is they can never be the same. Because the time is different, the place is different, the people are different and even you're not the same anymore.

By all means reminisce about the wonderful time you had in the past, but don't give yourself the undue pressure of re-creating a magical holiday experience. Every experience is fresh. Embrace the present without the burden of the past or worries for the future. Only in this way can you create a truly unique holiday experience.

2. Expensive Gift Equals Deep Love

Who knows since when we've started to interpret the price of a present as the amount of love we have for someone.

"I guess I don't mean much to him. He gave me this gift that costs only ten bucks at most."

"My wife will feel so unloved if I don't get this designer handbag for her."

We measure love by how expensive the gifts are, whether we admit it or not. So to show our affection, or in order not to look bad on ourselves, we feel obliged to buy costly presents, even if that means spending beyond what we can really beyond. That's a perfect way to land ourselves in more stress, if not more financial woes.

The commercial messages that we hear each day didn't help either: Give the latest; express your love with the coolest; make your children feel special; fulfill the Christmas dream of our loved ones! The pressure to buy has never been stronger.

But instead of succumbing to these advertising messages, stop and think: How can I express my love for someone without overspending? Are there other ways to make this holiday more meaningful?

Getting yourself into debt, or postponing your important life goals just so that you can afford to give elaborate gifts is definitely not the true spirit of the holiday season. This time of the year is also about spending more quality time with the family, reaffirming your relationships with friends and reaching out to the less fortunate.

3. I Must Show My Best Self

This is a powerful unconscious thought that motivates us to clean our house frantically, pushes us to go back to the gym and turns us into a 'gourmet' chef during the festive season. Never mind that for the rest of the year the home is always in a state of chaos, you've only used the gym for two months in the year, or the best meal you've ever concocted is heating up an instant meal kit.

The desire to measure up is intense during the holidays. All of a sudden, we get the energy to do the things which we've relentlessly resisted for the past 11 months. Why? Because we want people to see only our best self, be it our body, our home or the food we serve.

Don't get me wrong. There's nothing wrong with wanting to look good in front of others or to give your guests the best. But to what extend? To the extend of being someone you're not? To the extend of cramming a year's worth of exercises into 3 weekends, and risk injuring yourself in the process? To the extend of getting all stressed up and messed up just for a couple of nights in December?

Why not be comfortable with yourself and enjoy a less stressful holiday? What if your home is a bit on the cluttered side? It's your home and it shows your character. What if the foods are less than ideal? Would you rather spend time cooking up a storm in the kitchen for the whole evening, or have a relaxing time with your guests? What if you're just who you are?

Think back of the days when you truly enjoy the holidays without a long to-do list. Although you may not be able to relinquish all duties and obligations now, it's entirely possible to shed those unnecessary responsibilities which give you chronic stress.

Gifts don't have to be expensive to make a difference either. A simple card filled with sincere greetings, or sprinkled with one or two inspirational quotes about life can also make the recipients feel appreciated, remembered or special.

May you have a stress-free and joyful holiday season.
