Hand guns and hitting what you are aiming at?
I am 68 years old and looking for my first hand gun for protection. I learned to shoot and handle firearms in the military. I believe I can get a permit to carry a conceled weapon. I have read that even experienced officers are lucky to hit a barn using a full 9 mm at 5 feet when the "juices" are flowing. If I shoot, I want to hit whoever I'm shooting at and I want them to fall down and go boom! They have a lot of stuff on tv using lazer sights. It looks like pointing your weapon like a flashlight and you hit where the light is, without even using sights on the gun. Is that true? What kind of weapon and gear do I need. By the way I will NOT stand around waving my weapon til someone takes it away from me and jams it ...
The best solution for any "Juice Flowing" situation is practice, practice, and more practice, until you can hit your target every time blindfolded or even blind! It is all about muscle memory! If you are not able to practice enough to acquire muscle memory for some reason then the very best thing you can do to remedy the situation is to have A) A semi-auto gun that will go bang with no safety, or at most a trigger/grip safety. and B) A visible reference point of aim, which can be remedied by the Crimson Trace laser grips these folks speak of.
*In other words you need to KEEP IT SIMPLE...I pull trigger - It goes bang - and hits the red dot.
The Crimson Trace laser is activated by your grip on the gun (pressing a pressure point underneath the trigger with your middle finger). This takes no muscle memory.
As for what kind of firepower to put behind that little red dot is your homework, but like I said little to no safeties. You cannot go wrong with Springfield XD, HK, Sig, and Glock when it come to personal protection. All of these guns hold more that 10 rounds, so you will have more shots than a revolver. While I love the revolver as a backup for the well trained, I DO NOT recommend one in this instance. Yes they are simple to use when the "juices are flowing" but when the 5 or 6 shots are out then so are you. In addition to the high capacity, these guns are extremely reliable and require no thought to operate. That last bit is the most important factor for your search, once again: no muscle memory required.
See the re-occuring theme here? Either a lot of practice, or a lot of "No muscle memory involved" accessories. Kudos to everyone who recommended CTC.
Edit: The average police shootout distance occurs at 7 yards (21 feet). Most PD's worth their salt have trained extensively for engagements at this distance these days, so you don't hear of many 5 feet 6 shot misses due to adrenaline and a six-shooter anymore. You want to sight you laser in for that distance. I usually sight mine in a little lower. That way my point of impact will never be below or to the right or left of the laser dot point of aim at any distance. If you sight the laser in right on top of the iron sights at 7 yards then your laser will be a very ineffective aiming device at greater distances as you will shoot extremely low.
