Mount Pressure
There are many factors that effect how actively the fish will be feeding. You can use a barometer to determine one of those factors. It will help you decide when to go fishing and expect better results.
The changing weather plays a significant part in the behavior and feeding habits of fish in the surf. Other factors are wind, water temperature, moon phases and the tides. You can expect the best results whenever you can pick a time when most of them are working in your favor. This articles is about using barometric pressure for that purpose.
Changes in barometric pressure are due to the weather patterns that move through a specific geographic area. Areas of steady high pressure enjoy good weather and low pressure areas experience poor weather.
Atmospheric pressure changes have a more pronounced effect on shallow water more so than deeper waters. Surf fishing has the benefit of the best effects produced by these changes.
As a reference point, the normal standard barometric pressure is 29.53 InHg measured at sea level. The typical range of movement is usually between 28.5 InHg and 30.5 InHg. Even a small change of +/- 0.02 can effect fish behavior.
An approaching front is signaled by a falling barometer and often triggers a good bite as long as it is falling slowly, less than 0.21 inches per hour. There's an old adage to remember, "falling barometer rising fish and rising barometer falling fish".
You can expect poor fishing under a low steady pressure situation. Steady high pressure has a neutral effect. The good thing about high pressure is that it has only one direction it can go from there. So you know you can plan ahead to fish the surf soon. Your best bet is a slow steady falling pressure.
Remember barometric pressure is only one of the factors that effect feeding patterns. Use it in combination with the other factors involved. Next time you experience a good day (or night) of fishing pay attention to all the conditions that might be at work. Over time you will develop a real sense of the best time to hit the surf for some great fishing action.
