I think you cant go wrong with a shimano 4500 baitrunner. more info on what type of fishing you do would be helpful, however i will assume that by medium you mean #12 to 15 line.
On the west coast this can be paired with a longer rod for surf fishing, or a shorter rod to handle half/three quater day sportfishing boats, surface fishing. the baitrunner feature is real neat, and if she gets into it the conventional, or baitcasters can come later.
right now you want something that is fairly bulletproof, with a decent drag system, and available support in case something breaks.
