While getting to know a person, the similarities will only "pop up" if you have things in common. This is how we tend to choose our friends. The more you have in common with a person, the more you are apt to become friends. Friendship is a good thing, so there should be no reason for you to insist that this person continue to be simply an "acquaintance". This person you are referring to may be your cousins best friend but they probably have other friends too. Why couldn't you be one of them?
