Pocket Knife
Butterfly knifes are probably the most interesting and unique type of knife that anyone can find. These knives were originally invented in the Philippines. They were used by Filipino martial artists as a weapon to defend themselves and do battle as well as a display of their art form.
Butterfly knifes are different than most any other knifes because of the way they are constructed. Most folding knifes have a handle with a groove in it. To close the knife, the blade is folded and stored inside the handle. To open the knife, the blade is simply pulled out of the handle. This design is called a simple folding knife or more commonly a pocketknife.
Butterfly knifes, more commonly called balisong in the Philippines, are constructed quite differently than the traditional pocketknife. The butterfly knife is made up of five parts. There are two handles, one blade, a pin that connects the blade to the handles and acts as a swivel, and a locking mechanism at the base of the handle to keep the knife closed or in the open position
The handles on a butterfly knife actually close around the sharp edge of the blade and the dull edge of the knife. The act of opening a butterfly knife is called "flipping". Flipping it is a very ornate and beautiful motion
When done properly, flipping looks like a blur of spinning knives.
The butterfly knife is not legal to carry in most states in the U.S. Each state has its own laws governing the balisong. For example, in the state of Oregon it is legal to possess, sell, and even carry a balisong in public. The only restriction is that the balisong can not be concealed.
In most states the sale and possession of the butterfly knifes is illegal and is classified in the same way that switch blades and gravity knifes are.

Do you consider a pocket knife to be a weapon?
I mean a folding knife with a blade no longer than 3 1/2 inches long. Why or why not?
Also, does law enforcement consider a folded pocket knife in your pocket to be a weapon?
Your typical pocket knife is a tool, no different than a screwdriver. Can you stick somebody with it? Sure but you can do the same thing with a screwdriver.
There are larger folding fighters that are designed as being a weapon however. In some states there is a maximum legal length that a folding knife blade can be.
I carry pocket knife everywhere. My pocket knife for work clothes is small and slim but is still a lock blade. Since I live on a ranch my jeans knife if a much larger and heavy duty knife. It has to take a lot of abuse so it needs to be large and well made.
I've carried a pocket knife for over 30 years, used one nearly every day but never cut or stabbed anybody with it. Does that sound like a tool or a weapon?
