Pre Wired
You sit down on your couch, grab the TV remote and turn on your television. Without getting up, you select your favorite TV program and enjoy home entertainment. Voila! This is home automation made simple. You're making technology work for you in your home. If you think about it, you can name numerous other ways technology is already making your home life more comfortable, more enjoyable and more efficient. Read on to see how home automation can be made simple.
There is a lot more to home automation that TV remote control. New products are constantly coming on the market that make it possible to automate numerous other household tasks. You're missing out if you are not taking advantage of these new products.
If you're planning to build a new house, by all means consult with your builder about including the wiring and home infrastructure necessary to automate your house for 21st century. It will add value to your home.
You may be thinking that automation is very expensive -- requiring specialized skills and high-priced products. Think again!
If you have an existing house that is not pre-wired for automation, you can select the tasks you would like to automate and install products that are designed to do that specific job. It is not expensive -- you may be able to do the work yourself.
How to get started
Pick a task that you would like to automate. Suppose you would like to control your home lights via the internet. Let's say you're off on a vacation holiday. When you left home a couple weeks ago, you turned all the lights off to save energy. But you don't enjoy returning to a dark house -- especially if you live in a dark area. For your own safety you wish you could turn on your post lamp and your porch light before you arrive home.
Control your home lights via internet
You already have high speed internet service in your home. Your wireless router and internet modem are in place. You simply connect your existing router via an ethernet cable to a smart automation controller that plugs into a nearby power outlet. Then you then plug your porch lamp into another smart module and plug that module into a nearby power outlet. After you set up your system you are ready to go!
You can check via the internet to see whether your porch lights are off or on. You can instruct your controller to dim the light. You can instruct your porch lamp to turn on automatically at sunset, and turn off at sunrise.
How does this work?
It uses technology that communicates both wirelessly and over the electric power lines already installed throughout your house. There are products on the market today that are designed to work together with maximum functionality.
Expand your home automation system
The starter system that you set up to control your post lamp and porch lights can be expanded to do much more. Dimmers and switches, hard-wired outlet modules, plug-in modules, thermostats controls for heating and cooling, garage door controls, and much more -- all can be controlled as long all the devices are compatible with each other.

Pulling extra wires from existing conduit. (Installing 7.1 Home Theater in room pre-wired for 5.1)?
Hi,
The living room in our new house is pre-wired for a 5.1 home theater system. I have a 7.1 system. How difficult would it be to pull extra wires so that I can use all the back speakers? Should I get a professional or is it something I can do myself using a Fish Tape. Any other ideas?

Speaker wiring is not that expensive. Use the existing wires as the pull line. Make sure that the new lines are taped real well with electrical tape and spiral it so it will not get caught in the conduit. I would use at least 15 to 20 turns without making a ball.
