At least in the United States, 1987 was the first year of the five speed manual transmission.
The pattern was "H" pattern 1-4, fifth up and to the right. On the 4 w/push button, it was just an H pattern.
Reverse, was to the left and up, with a ring on the shifter to keep it from being entered when selecting first gear. Both transmissions had reverse in the same position.
