Red Filter

Lighting is the most important thing to research and experiment with when taking Portraits. One of the benefits of shooting portraits is the benefit of control. You can control the lighting through the use of different methods and through trial and error you can easily develop the desired effects. If you have a camera with a built in flash, a good idea is to invest in some sort of diffuser to soften the flash effect. A harsh flash generally creates an unpleasant and unflattering look. I have attached a website describing lighting setups in depth. The basic concept is to make sure that the lighting is balanced with no shadows. In general a two light setup or one light with reflector will work best. If you are shooting a portrait in the outdoors, the use of a flash and or reflector will be a benefit as the lighting general can be uneven.
When shooting portraits you need to realize that using the wrong lens is a bad thing. If you use a lens that is to wide, the resulting effect will be an uneven distortion and or just plain funny looking. The best lens I would recommend would be a 70-200 f/2.8 or an 80-200 f/2.8. Using a length of at least 70mm will eliminate most of the awkward distortion cause by the extreme bending. The human eye is "roughly" the equivalent to a 43mm lens. Often people like to use a 50mm f/1.8 lens to take portraits. This is not the ideal portrait lens. The 50mm is too wide and will cause distortion. While this is not extremely noticeable at first, when you go to process the image, you will notice that it just doesn't look right. I like to shoot at around 90mm. This length will allow you to be far enough away from your subject to blur out the background but close enough to fill the frame.
As stated above you, using the correct lens will allow you to create a nice blurry background. A key reason to want a blurry background is to eliminate distractions. You taking a picture of a person and that is what you want the focus of the shot to be, not the person walking by. One thing to keep in mind if using an f/2.8 lens is that if you shoot at f/2.8, you might not get the entire person in focus. Experience and trial and error will help to learn what works best.
When shooting people, the angle in which you take their picture can make or break your photo. It is ideal to shoot from a downward angle. An obvious reason for being above the subject is that it will cause them to look up. When you look up your neck tends to get tighter and thus look more flattering. If you subject looks down it tends to add a few pounds whichnless to say does not look very good at all. You do not want to be way above your subject but rather roughly 10 to 12 inches works best. Depending on how your subject is sitting or standing you may need to move left or right of the subject. Practice is the key to finding the perfect angles. It is good to write down what works best for different situations. Photographers generally carry a small notebook or cheat sheet to help jog their memory when shooting.
The last things you can "play around with" are photo filters. There are a number of filters and while you can perform 99% of filter effects during post processing, it is almost always better to do as little post processing as possible. A few filters that can be used are those such as a Diffusion filter or a Soft focus filter. You can use a colored filter to balance out lighting or you can use a Red filter when shooting Black And White to give a higher contrast.

What color filter or filters would make a red tomato appear red? Black?
Need some help with science homework.
A red filter to appear red
A blue or green filter to appear black
The tomato reflects red light. A blue or green filter only allows blue or green light to pass thus blocking all of the tomato's red light. A red filter allows the red light to pass thus keeping the tomato red
