HEEELP!!! Chiggers or Jiggers what ever you want to call them they are such a pain!! what can i do now??
ok its 11:15pm so i dont think my dad will drive me to a store (if ther even is one open) and i have ch/jiggers i have put clear fingernail polish all over the spots but they are still sooo ichy and we have no calamine lotion what can i do??? is it possable that they could be spreading b/c i swear they are lol and to prevent them will "Repel Insect Repellent, Sportsmen Max, 40% Deet" work?
Here's the whole chigger story, everything you need to know.
PREVENTION: Do the usual outdoor bug prevention: socks, long pants tight at the ankles, a bug repellent with deet, and stay out of tall weeds and grasses. Here's the SECRET: Take lot's of B vitamins, especially B1. Take a daily vitamin with B vitamins in it, and then about 3 days before you anticipate being somewhere you will encounter chiggers, start taking a B Complex vitamin, lots of it. B vitamins can not hurt you no matter how much you take, unlike some other vitamins. You know that smell when you open a bottle of vitamins? That's B1. Don't worry, people won't smell it but the chiggers will and they hate it. The other trick is not to tell anybody else so that the chiggers have something to feed on more appealing than you. Your obnoxious cousin Bob? He's what's for dinner!
CURE: Ok. You didn't know this and you've got chigger bites. Contrary to popular belief, chiggers DO NOT burrow under your skin and live on your body, so forget any nonsense you have heard or read about putting nail polish on the bites to smother them. They aren't there. They don't lay eggs and they aren't contageous. A chiggar is actually a mite in it's larval stage. Not being an adult, they can't lay eggs. What they do is inject you with a poison/chemical that disolves you skin and this is what they feed on (previously, I erroniously said they eat blood - they don't). This is what causes you to swell and itch. All this being said, chiggers can live on you and in your clothes for up to six hours. Take a hot shower and wash your clothes in hot water (they can live through warm and cold wash).
ITCHING: A day or two later, you will start to itch (some people may start earlier). By this time all the chiggers are dead and gone. Apply a topical nerve numbing product to the spot, something like ambusol or something for muscle soreness (consult your pharmacist). If you have already scratched them raw, pick something that won't sting (again, consult your pharmacist). Next, apply calamine or similar product. I use Ivy Dry.
OH NO! YOU DON'T HAVE ANY PRODUCTS! There are many home remedies for the itching associated with bug bites. Find the one that works best for you.
1. Dilute lime juice with water an apply to bites.
2. Make a paste with salt and a little water. Apply.
3. Make a paste with baking soda and apply.
4. Rubbing alchohol.
5. Rub dry soap on the bites. Reduces swelling and itching.
6. Rub the inside of a bannana peel on the bites.
7. Make a mixture of olive oil and vinegar and apply to bite.
