When buying a guitar for the first time, there are a lot of things to consider such as the level of guitar playing, the cost, the music genre, and the maintenance. Guitars can be of the acoustic or the electric type. Acoustic guitars have the hollow body and the sound holes which are used to amplify the string vibrations. Electric guitars on the other hand can be of the hollow body, semi-hollow body or the solid body type. Electric guitars are guitars that have electronic pickups that help in the amplification of the sounds that the strings produced.Â
Hobby or not to HobbyÂ
The choice of guitar will depend on the level of guitar playing to be done. If the playing is meant only as a hobby, then it is advisable to start with an acoustic guitar. An acoustic guitar is a more practical choice for somebody with no prior guitar playing experience but would like to enroll in guitar lessons or a rock guitar lesson.Â
A number of people who take up guitar lessons would eventually realize that they do not have what it takes to become a musician and will decide to stop their rock star dreams. If this is the case, then having an acoustic guitar as their first guitar is a wise decision. However, there are a lot of people that decide to purchase a better, more expensive guitar after having a few electric guitar lessons. These people realize their guitar playing potential and know that good guitar playing needs a good guitar to play with.Â
To Amp or not to AmpÂ
The next consideration in buying the first guitar is the cost. An acoustic guitar would be a better choice over an electric one in terms of the total overall cost. The advantage of an acoustic guitar over an electric one is that with the former, no other equipment is needed to play it while the latter needs at least an amplifier to increase the volume of the sound that the strings make.Â
An electric guitar would need to have an amplifier and a good quality cable for it to sound good. Except for the hollow-bodied and semi-hollow bodied electric guitars, most electric guitars in the market today are made of solid wood and have no internal cavities that help to amplify the vibration of the strings. Instead, electronic pickups are used to convert the strings vibrations into electrical signals are then fed through an amplifier via cables. Without an amplifier, the sound that a solid-body electric guitar makes will hardly be audible to other people. However, if cost is not a problem, then it is better to purchase an electric guitar.Â
To Rock or not to RockÂ
Another consideration in choosing the first guitar is the music genre that the guitar buyer is interested in. Acoustic guitars and hollow-bodied electric guitars are almost similar in terms of appearance with the sole distinction that hollow-bodied electric guitars have an electronic pickup located underneath the strings for added amplification. Both guitars are best for country music and for light jazz music.Â
Solid-bodied electric guitars on the other hand are the best first guitars for those about to rock. The sound that these guitars make can vary depending on the equipment and effects that are used with it. Semi-hollow electric guitars are best used for blues, jazz and sometimes rock music. A number of musicians prefer the electric guitars that are semi-hollow because these guitars give them the best of both worlds.Â
When purchasing a first guitar, it is always important to do some research first. Ask a friend who already has one for a recommendation. Scout around for good rock guitar lesson instructors.

Jem, on the other hand understands a bit more and from his perspective, it's an internal conflict, he sees trouble, he sees that his dad is in trouble, but what can he do?
So I would say from Scout's perspective, it's very ironic.
