When you imagine Italy, it is really Florence Italy that you are seeing. That is because Florence is at the heart of Italy. If you want to spend a day visiting Florence's many museums, stop by the tourist office for a museum pass. There are different types of passes available, and a pass will prevent you from having to pay a cover charge at every museum you visit. Because of its role as one of the most artistic cities in Europe, Florence is covered in museums that showcase both art and history.
Some of the city's most notable museums include Galleria degli Uffizi, Bargello, Accademia, and Museo dell'Opera del Duomo for art, and Pitti Palace and the Institute and Museum of the History of Science for history.
Florence central train station is located the historical centre. The architectural structure was designed in 1930 with the outline of Fascio Littorio, Fascism's main symbol. The Santa Maria Novella station is probably the main work of the Rationalism group: the building is modern in its stile but has also a classic look for the white-stone stone facade.
Dipped in the maze of the ancient streets of the historical centre, Piazza del Duomo is Florence spiritual heart, housing San Giovanni Baptistery and the city Cathedral. The Dome, with its Cupola distinguishing Florence's skyline, has been realized by Brunelleschi over 14 years, and finally consecrated to Santa Maria del Fiore by pope Eugenio IV. Giotto's bell Tower, 84 meters high adorned by statues and bas-reliefs, brightens with white, red and green marbles this marvellous square.
Florence's most popular site is its Duomo (cathedral), the Cattedrale de Santa Maria del Fiore. The exterior, made of green, pink, and white marble, has several elaborate doors and interesting statues. Inside, Brunelleschi's Dome is a masterpiece of construction. Buy a ticket to climb the 463 steps to the top of the bell tower. The panoramic view of the city is amazing. Please note, is not air-conditioned on the way up, so peak summer months can get very hot, so make sure and bring water.
Due to its relatively small size, journeys around central Florence can usually be made on foot. If you have to travel a longer distance between attractions, take advantage of the city bus network, which is operated by two companies. The buses run frequently throughout the city and a single journey on the bus costs around 1 Euro for a single journey or around 4 Euros for a day pass.
After returning home they both agreed that my Italy travel advice was worth taking. Traveling and vacationing in Italy is much different from most American vacation experiences. If you like history and art Italy has more than enough to go around. Even total art buffs can become a little burnt out if touring museums and monuments is the main focus.
