Steripen Classic
Say you're camping and you need a way to get clean water. There's a stream nearby, but you know there might be bacteria or certain protozoa such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium living in the water. No worries. Just whip out the SteriPEN and this device will do for you in 90 seconds what chemicals can't in 4 hours.
This product seems to hold a lot of promise. Soldiers in the battle field who have to resort to drinking either tap water or desert ground water can't carry a whole water filtration system on their backs. However, this lightweight SteriPEN can be packed away easily and comes in handy in such situations.
The SteriPEN Classic model uses 2 AA batteries and with Lithium Disposables, it can purify 16 ounces of water 200 times.
Just how effective is it? It's been tested at A&L Laboratories, as well as at the University of Maine, University of Arizona, Oregon Health Sciences University, and the Ryerson University - Toronto Canada, and has been proven to kill 99.9999% of bacteria, 99.99% of viruses and 99.9% of protozoa That is way above the requirements of the US EPA's Guide Standard and Protocol for Testing Microbiological Water Purifiers.
How reliable is it? Let's just say it's been used on top of Mt. Everest and Kilimanjaro.
Will SteriPEN cause skin or eye damage from UV light? Not if you use it correctly. The blue light is simply an indicator that the device is working properly. Here's what SteriPEN.com has to say:
"UV-C will not pass through most materials. Drinking containers made from glass, ceramic, metal, and nearly all plastics block UV-C transmission. Also, the underside of the air/water interface in a water container acts as a very effective reflector for UV-C. As a result, when SteriPEN's lamp is immersed in virtually any drinking vessel, the UV-C is well contained. Note that SteriPEN's water sensors prevent it from operating unless the lamp is completely immersed."
