Well first, you have to indulge in a little bit of research. You have to measure the room where the stove will be sited, length, width and height, and use one of the many kilowatt calculators available on the internet to gauge how much output you will need to warm the room to a comfortable level. When doing this, you should also take into account other extraneous factors that might impact on this calculation, such as un-insulated walls, single glazed windows and high ceilings for instance. Once you have this figure, you know the output and can look for models accordingly.

Less technical concerns now come to the forefront, like what the actual thing will look like. Questions you should ask yourself is where you will be sitting it; as in, do you want it set into a niche in the wall or free standing? Also, if you want to see the fire you will have to get one with a glass door and with airwash to keep the glass clean, and if you want to be able to use your wood burning stove with the door open then you will have to get one with a larger opening. Another consideration is whether you want a back boiler - if you want to heat water and fill radiators then you will need to get one. There are so many styles available, from sleek, modern ones to cast iron, more antique-type burners, so you should be able to find one that suits you.

Installation of a wood burning stove is best left to experts, as there are a few things to take into consideration. Lining the chimney is often a prerequisite to avoid complications with tar and smoke when the stove is in use. Also, the flue has to be of certain sizes to allow for safe clearing of smoke.

One final consideration to make is to check if you live in a Smoke Control Area. This legislation was brought in to combat smog and associated air pollutants, and if you live in one of these areas you will have to check to ensure you buy a recommended and approved model of burner.

how much would a cast iron dutchwest wood burning stove go for?
me and my buddy pick up a cast iron dutchwest wood burning stove. Model # FA264CCL. it's dated 1983. this thing must weigh like 700-800lbs. we were going to restore it, but i was trying to get an idea of what it would be worth. if anybody has an idea let me know.
