What is the best water filtration system for backpacking?
I don't think there is one "best". I usually camp in the GSMNP and water is usually fairly clean. Most of the time I boil water and have never had problem. Have used the old PUR purifier that filtered and purified with iodine - didn't like the taste. Bought the MSR filter (mini-works) and used it frequently with no problems.
Have also used the Katadyn Micropur tablets without filter - a little off taste.
Ideal solution for me would be to treat the water with one of the chemical treatments - Katadyn Micropur for example - and then filter with my MSR - (carbon section would help taste)

Filter the water and then use SteriPEN to kill any virus

the treatment and then filter is too much trouble and the SteriPENs are expensive so I'll probably tend to boil until I can afford the pen
