If you are going to be taking a lot of pictures there are some essential accessories that can really help make your digital photograph success rates rise. First, you really should have a camera bag. A tripod is a good investment because it will allow you to take pictures without looking like you were shaking the whole time. If you do not need to take many pictures with a tripod then a pocket-sized version may be perfect for your needs. If you are going to be taking a lot of pictures with a tripod then you are going to want a tripod that will expand to almost any size as well as fold down compact.
Your last essential accessory with digital photography will be a memory card. The type of memory card you will need varies depending upon your exact digital camera, but you should purchase the largest sized card you can afford so you can always be sure you have plenty of room for snapping pictures. As the megapixel size of cameras increases, so does the room that each picture takes so you need plenty of space and can continue snapping away whether you are at home or not.

No image stabilization, could i use a tripod?
If my camera has no image stabilization, would using a tripod have the same effect? Would a VR lens help?

Yes, using a tripod will give you the same result as image stabilization. A tripod will help get you sharp photos at speeds even slower than possible with image stabilization (IS) or VR. There is usually no advantage of using the IS or VR in a lens while the camera is on a tripod (just turn it off when using a tripod).
Setting up a tripod and using it can be a little slow and cumbersome. This is where the advantage with IS or VR in a lens can come in handy. The improvement is usually about 2-3 F-stops in shutter speed. In some cases, IS will simply allow a less expensive lens to be handheld at the same shutter speeds you would get with a more expensive, faster lens with a larger aperture. A tripod will allow even slower shutter speed.
IS (or VR) is a fantastic technology. If you can afford a lens or camera with it, it can really add convenience to your photography and expand your ability for shooting handheld in lower light levels.
Some tips for tripods:
Choose a good strong one not a cheap one (Bogen and Gitzo are very good brands)
Use a remote release to eliminate vibration from your hand pressing the shutter
To even further dampen vibration inside the camera, you can place a bean bag on the camera
