Ultra Light
More than 25 years ago a man I've always considered a 'trout fishing master' of sorts, taught me how to catch trout using worms, and in this article I will teach you the same technique. The 'trout fishing master' that I'm referring to was my best friends' father, and he was known as a great trout fisherman. This man was able to catch trophy trout out of heavily fished rivers in central Pennsylvania were other anglers didn't believe fish of that class lived.
He caught most of those trophy trout using the technique outlined in this article. If you want to know how to catch trout using worms, this is certainly the article for you. The first thing this man believed in was using ultra light gear. This obviously means an ultra light rod and reel and he always spooled his reel with four pound test monofilament (which I continue to use to this day). Using light line is of the utmost importance when fishing for trout using worms. You want the focus of the trout's attention to be on the worm and not your line, so the lighter the line, the better.
The goal with this technique is to have a worm flow naturally with the current, bouncing along the bottom as it flows with the water. When it comes to the worms themselves, you have two choices. The first is obviously live worms. The second choice is synthetic worms such as Berkley Power or Gulp worms. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for live worms, but have found that synthetic worms catch trout as well.
To rig up for the technique start by grabbing the end of your line and tying on a barrel swivel that matches the size of your fishing line. On the opposite end of the barrel swivel, tie on a set of pre tied gang hooks. These hooks are the best way to present worms as bait. At this point a worm is added to the gang hooks (pinch the worm in half if you are using small gang hooks). Split shot sinkers are added above the barrel swivel for weight as needed. The size and number of split shot will vary depending on current flow and the depth of the water.
You want to cast your baited rig parallel to yourself into the current and close your bail. Use your index finger to 'feel' your line as your offering flows with the current. You should feel it hitting bottom as it flows. When your offering is directly below you (depending on where you are standing) the drift is over and it's time to reel in and re cast. If you want to know the best way to catch trout with worms, this is it.
Also keep in mind that getting snagged is part of the deal when fishing with this technique. Don't let this fact frustrate you. It's like the 'master' used to say, "If your not getting snagged, you're not fishing in the right place." The real secret to this technique comes with repetition. As you use it and learn the little nuances it will certainly become your "go to" trout fishing technique. The bottom line is that if you want to know how to catch trout with worms, this is it.
