What is a tankless water heater?
Tankless water heater, as the stated in the name, is the kind of water heating system that provides hot water without using a tank. Also known as instantaneous water heater, the heater heats the water on demand. When the water tap is turned on, cold water flows through the heating device and delivers hot water on the userÂ’s end.
Tankless water heater works rather differently from the conventional water heating system – it does not require a tank for hot water storage and it is more environment friendly as the system avoids standby energy consumption.
Shopping for tankless water heater?
There are quite a few consideration points when it comes to selecting the right tankless water heater. Power supplies, capacity, and application are some of the majors that shoppers cannot avoid.
Power supplies with tankless water heater
Tankless water heaters are normally powered by electrical, gas, or propane. Different power types are designed for different usage.
For example electrical tankless water heaters have lower power efficiency however it is easier to be installed. On the other hand, Gas or propane fueled tankless water heaters have better power efficient but more complex installation process.
Application of tankless water heater
When you are shopping for tankless water heater, you will have to be aware that some of these heaters are for single point application and some with multiple point application. Single point application means you will only have one single outlet for hot water (your shower tap for example); while multiple points enables you to have more hot water outlet (for example, shower and basin taps).
Capacity of tankless water heater
Tankless water heaters are sized according to its maximum temperature rise possible at a given flow rate. Getting an oversized heater is a waste of money; while heaters with too low capacity will not supply sufficient hot water.
WhatÂ’s the maximum water usage (gallon per minute, GPM) in one time? WhatÂ’s the cold water temperature in your local area? WhatÂ’s the necessary temperature rise? These are questions to be answered before making your buying decision.

Electrical tankless water heaters priced about $100 - $200; while gas powered water heaters takes $800 - $900. It's not a cheap buy for your home thus careful considerations are needed before you make your purchase.

Basic operation is that your water is heated as you use it by a gas burner. A normal hot water tank stores hot water and is less efficient since it has to keep the water hot at all times. Although on-demand heaters are efficient they can have many maintenance problems which could offset your savings. The first poster was correct about the water hardness.
