Whistle Compass
If you already have an emergency kit that your family can grab and use when a natural disaster strikes, good for you! All families are vulnerable to natural disasters and should keep a sturdy backpack in an easily-accessible place that contains a variety of items essential to survival during the first 72 hours: shelter, first-aid, light, food, and water. However, here are some handy items you may not have thought of that would be useful to keep in those all-important emergency kits.
-- Duct tape: They say there's nothing in the world that can't be fixed with duct tape, so why not include a roll in your emergency kit? Duct tape can repair torn clothing and other items, hold awkward items together if needed, and even has first aid applications in a pinch.
-- 5 in 1 whistle: There are lots of emergency whistles out there, but since space is at a premium in your emergency kit, why not get one that can have lots of applications besides making noise? A 5 in 1 whistle not only has a shrill toot to attract attention, it also has a waterproof match container, signal mirror, compass, and flint.
-- Light reflective vest: If a disaster occurs at night, it may be difficult for rescuers to locate you even if you have a flashlight. Increase the chances of being seen by search and rescue by keeping a light reflective vest with your kit. Some vests are especially designed to fit into emergency kits and are extremely lightweight and thin and fold up to the size of an envelope.
When choosing extra items for your emergency kit, think outside the box a bit by including some unusual, but extremely handy items.

why do all the compasses say different directions?
I was just in a Bass Pro shop for a survival whistle and one had a compass on it. I, then, grabbed a few more to test the whistle compass, and, they all gave a different directions when I held them all the same direction. What did I do wrong? What happened, please?
Well, look at where you were. You were inside a building surrounded by metal beams and electrical wiring. Electricity flowing through the wires also cause electromagnetic forces (high school physics).
All of these will affect a compasses' accuracy. It cannot effectively pick up the earth's magnetic fields with all these artificial magnetic forces around it.
Even outside, being near metal poles, etc., will throw a compass off. Out in the woods, any one of them should work just fine (unless your are on a magnetite ore body, then no compass will work right.)
